Orange wraps. Very good condition, with age-related page toning and some rubbing and wear to head/heel of spines. ~~This pair of vintage Harper's Magazine issues are notable for the first-time appearance of the short story "Gal Young Un" by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Part 1 appears in the June issue and Part 2 appears in the July issue. This story was accepted by Harper's after having been rejected by Scribner's Magazine--and was subsequently awarded the O. Henry Memorial Prize in 1933 for best short story. The story takes place in backcountry of Florida during the 1920s Prohibition. A wealthy widow named Mattie is courted by and marries an opportunistic young bootlegger and endures his neglect, but her spirit keeps her on top in the end. The story was made into a movie in 1979. Rawlings (1896-1953) is best known for her novel "The Yearling" and for her "Cross Creek" books. ~~ A nice set of collectible Rawlings literature, offered as a set at a slightly reduced price.
