Protected in a clear archival cover. ~~ This is a compelling and well-researched account of the voyage of the 11th-century Viking woman named Gudrid Thorbjarnardottír from Greenland to North America, accompanied by her husband and three Viking crews. They were searching for the New World, previously discovered by Eirik the Red some 500 years before Columbus's voyage. The story of Gudrid emanates from the Old Norse Vinland sagas: "The Saga of Eirik the Red" and "The Saga of the Greenlanders," and archeological evidence supports the details in these sagas of discovery. The travelers arrived in Vinland and lived there for three years, and Gudrid bore a child there. Brown's fascinating narrative combines the story of the life of this extraordinary woman as told by the sagas with a description of the process of uncovering the evidence and the remains of the settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows. ~~ Laid into this copy are four pages of publisher press release/promotional material.
