Black cloth with full-color paper illustration pasted on cover; green spine titling; illustrated endpapers, text block has green topstain. 204 pages. Color frontispiece and 7 addtional full-page color plates, and additional black and white illustrations throughout. Book is clean, binding intact, with rubbing wear on upper and lower edges of boards; topstain is spotted due to color rubbing off; a very light, sparse smattering foxing spots on fore-edge and bottom of text block. Gift inscription on front free endpaper: "Nancy James with love from Aunt Sara - Christmas 1938." Front pastedown has Nancy James's name and "1938" in pencil. Interior pages clean and unmarked. Dust jacket has light age soiling, has edge wear consisting of a few short tears, creases, rubbing, and tiny chipping at tail of spine and at flap folds, with old tape repairs on reverse side. The larger flaws are a long narrow chip (1/4" x 2") at top back edge of spine and a similar but much smaller chip at top of rear flap fold. Protected in a clear archival cover. ~~ The stories in this book were originally collected by Asbjørnsen and Moe and published as "Norske Folkeeventyr" (1843). Many of them were translated into English by Sir George Webbe Dasent and published as "Popular Tales from the Norse" in the later 1800s. This book has two translated tales not from Dasent: 'The Three Princesses in the Blue Mountain' is reprinted from publisher David Nutt, and 'Prince Lindworm' was newly translated for this volume. A lovely collection.
