Almqvist is a Swedish expert in medieval Norse literature and international folklore, and he devoted much of his career exploring the interface between the Norse and Celtic peoples and folk traditions. The essays in this book demonstrate the links between Ireland and Scandinavia in folklore and literature, and highlight themes, motifs, and ways in which "the exchange of cultural goods and cross-fertilization of ideas resulted from the interplay between the Celtic and Nordic peoples of north-western Europe." A sampling of the 28 essays include (titles only): Dreams in Old Norse and Old Irish Literature ; Mist, Magicians and Murderous Children: International Migratory Legends Concerning the 'Black Death' in Iceland ; Note on the Wading Giant in Irish and Welsh ; The Original Name of the Viking Settlement at Limerick ; The Irish Hobby Horse and the Icelandic Horse Dance [by Seamas O Cathain*] ; Confrontational Ghost-Laying in England and Denmark; Fer in the North Contree: 'With His Whole Heart' Revisited [by Eilis Ni Dhuibhne-Almqvist*] ; The Wedding Dance and the Bridal House in Faeroese Fold Tradition. ~~ This copy is distinguished in that it bears Bo Almqvist's signature on the title page as well as that of Editor/Contributor Seamus O Cathain and Contributor Eilis Ni Dhuibhne-Almqvist. A special volume of original scholarship.
