1 Burns, Ric; Sanders, JamesNew York: An Illustrated History
New York Alfred A. Knopf 1999 0375709681 / 9780375709685 First Edition Soft Cover Fine 8.25" x 11"
The companion to the PBS Series produced by Lisa Ades. Oversize, thick, heavy softcover. 575 pages. 500 illustrations in color and black & white [photographs, lithographs, paintings, prints]. Selected Bibliography. Index. ~ Book is clean, straight, tight, unmarked, with minute corner rubbing. ~~This book complements the twelve-hour film documentary which provides a sweeping and comprehensive 400-hundred-year history of New York City. From the Introduction: "The city of New York, unparalleled in its size, grandeur, and complexity, has engendered, over the course of its turbulent and spectacular history, a story that is nothing less than an urban epic--as richly peopled, as dramatically plotted, and as movingly profound as any great fiction . . . Founded at the dawn of the modern age, when Europeans first coursed out across the globe, New York was fated to become the ultimate city of dreaming and desire, a place of passage and transformation, of possibility and exchange, of mingled cultures and identities--the place where above all others people from around the world would come to shed tradition, change identities, realize ambition, make themselves new . . . No place would project itself more relentlessly into the future. No place would embody more powerfully the creative and the destructive forces of modern life. No place would embrace more completely the American experiment in capitalism and democracy--until in the end, the story of New York would be nothing less than the story of America itself rising." Please note: This is a large, heavy book, and an additional shipping fee will be required for orders outside of the U.S.
