Green cloth with gilt spine titling and illustrated endpapers. 186 pages, which includes a 20-page Afterword by Robert T. Jones. First English translation from Czech; translated by Tatiana Firkusny, Maritza Morgan & Robert T. Jones. Beautiful color illustrations by Sendak, who also designed the New York City Opera's production of the Janacek opera. Book is fine. Dust jacket is near fine, with light rubbing/wear at tops and bottoms of flap folds and a few marks on front cover. ~~ In this morality tale of sorts a young fox is captured by a forester to be raised as a pet. As the young fox loses her innocence and learns to uses her cunning and charm, the forester must grapple with nature. "Tesnohlidek's many-layered story of tangled human and animal relationships juxtaposes a world of not-so-innocent animals, living out brief lives of brutal harmony, with another world of longer-lived humans, who are no less brutal, scarcely more intelligent, and a good deal less happy." In archival cover.
