1 Santee, RossApache Land
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1947 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Fair Ex-Library
First printing; "A" on copyright page. Beige cloth with brown titling and brown stamped illustration on cover. 216 pages. B & W drawing illustrations by the author/artist. Ross Santee is a well known artist of the West known for his realisitic portayals and has authored several books. Born in Iowa and after struggling to make it in New York as a cartoonist, he headed west to Arizona. There he became a cowboy and horse wrangler on various ranches in Apache territory and gained an intimate knowledge of the history and customs of the Apaches, whom he liked and respected. In this book he shares anecdotes, stories and experiences, as well as lore and lifestyle of the Apaches. The book is rated very good minus due to the fact that it shows various signs of having been part of a U.S. Navy library. The front and back covers, which show normal age soiling, each have tape ghosts at the top and bottom. Edges of textblock are age-browned, and bottom has a stamp covered by black marker. The endpapers have brown age marks and have some yellowed tape marks and remnants from the jacket having been taped to the boards; front and back pastedowns have a Navy library stamp that has been crossed out with a black marker; back free endpaper has remnants of what was probably a card pocket. These interior flaws are all confined to the endpapers, and the body of the interior pages are in quite nice condition. Dust jacket is in fair condition, has some closed tears at edges and various places and small chips at flap folds; previous owner also made some repairs on back side of jacket with masking tape which fold over to the front side at the top and bottom of the spine area. There are also some brown discolorations on the spine area and on the flap folds from tape. Now protected in a fresh archival cover. Please see bookseller photo; additional photos will be promptly supplied upon request.
