1 Smullyan, RaymondThe Lady or the Tiger and Other Logical Puzzles: And Other Logic Puzzles, Including a Mathematical Novel That Features Godel's Great Discovery
New York Alfred A Knopf 1982 0394514661 / 9780394514666 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
First printing. White cloth spine with green boards; gilt spine lettering and silver decoration on front cover. Retains publisher's red staining on top of text block. 226 pages. Author is a respected professor of mathematics and logic. An entertaining series of paradoxes, metapuzzles, number exercises, and combinatorial brain-twisters, all related to important concepts of contemporary logic and mathematical theory. Features an array of characters--vampires, psychiatrists, dreamers, hermits, kings--who pose questions, giving just enough information to enable readers to solve problems of increasing difficulty. The last section of the book is a mathematical novel in which Inspector Craig finds himself in ever deeper mathematical waters, eventually leading to the heart of Godel's revolutionary theory of undecidability. Book is in very good condition, tight, interior pages very clean; front board has wrinke at top corner; white cloth spine is lightly age-spotted and has a 1/2" tear in the cloth at the board crease; very light foxing spots on top of text block, hardly noticeable because of red topstain. Dust jacket is very good plus; front flap shows original $13.95 price; edges lightly curled rather than worn; wrinkle at top flap fold and heel of spine with 1" closed tear. In clear archival cover.
