1 Peck, Robert NewtonDukes
Sarasota, FL Pineapple Press 1983 091092306X / 9780910923064 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
Gold boards with red metallic titling and wagon wheel illustration on front cover. 123 pages. Jacket illustration and design by Edwin L. Stephens. By the author of "A Day No pigs Would Die" and "Soup." ~~ Book is very nearly fine, appears unread, with two very small, very minor rub marks on top edge, and a few tiny, very faint spots on top of text block. Dust jacket is near fine, with minimal edge toning, a single 3/4" closed tear at top of back panel, and minimal rubbing wear at tops of spine and flap folds. Now in clear archival cover. ~~ This prolific author of books for young adults wrote his first novel at the age of 44 years. Dukes is his second novel set in Florida. This is the story of Lucky, an orphan girl; Baptist, a deaf-mute Black fighter; and Nose, his boxing manager, who travel across Florida in their "Dukes" wagon, putting on prize fighting shows. The word "Dukes" is a double entendre, signifying not just the fight shows, but also the inner dignity of this unfortunate trio. Written for young adults.
