4 Matthiessen, PeterShadow Country
New York Modern Library 2008 0-679-64019-3 / 9780679640196 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine Fine
First printing. Grey cloth with "Modern Library" decorative endpapers. 892 pages. Winner of the 2008 National Book Award. Book is near fine, lacking only the freshness of a brand new book. Covers show slight scuffing and hint of soiling, but no actual defects. There is a single, small, very light stain at edge of bottom of text block. Dust jacket is fine with very minor crinkling at head and heel of spine. ~~ Matthiessen's previously published trilogy: "Killing Mister Watson," "Lost Man's River," and "Bone By Bone" has here been reworked and refined to produce this masterpiece of Florida historical fiction, originally conceived as a single novel, and now realizing Matthiessen's vision. Based on a real event and a legendary real character, the outlaw and Everglades sugar planter E. J. Watson. An absorbing read that is also educational. In archival cover. This is a very nice collectible copy.
