1 Rennert, Jack100 Years of Bicycle Posters
New York Universe Books/ Darien House 1973 0876631960 / 9780876631966 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine No Jacket
Oversized book in yellow cloth with paper illustration of a bicycle poster by H. Gray on front cover. 112 pages. Full-page poster illustrations in color and black & white, with notes and comments on each. ~~ Book is in excellent condition, with very light surface soiling and just a tiny bit of wear to lower front corner and one corner of head of spine. Interior pages are clean, bright and unmarked. ~~ Rennert notes in the Introduction that the year of publication of this book marked the approximate 100th anniversary of two technologies: color lithography and the bicycle. "It is the coincidence of these two inventions--the modern bicycle and the modern poster--converging and maturing at about the same time, that interested me." This founding and parallel growth is evidenced through the bicycle posters. Some general trends in bicycle poster production are noted: that prior to 1900, the posters were wild and extreme in their design and claims, which reflected the revolutionary and liberating nature of the bicycle; that women abound in the posters, representing both femininity and freedom; that the posters often depicted allegorical and mythological figures, which reflected both the classical training of many of the artists, and the use of popular motifs of gods and goddesses to reach the public. Significant artists and lithographers represented include Edward Ancourt, Chaix, Toulouse-Lautrec, Jean-Louis Forain, Eugene-Samuel Grasset, Will H. Bradley, Jean de Paleologue (PAL), John Hassall, Jules Cheret, Alphonse Mucha, Edward Penfield, Leonetto Cappiello, Louis Oury, Ludwig Hohlwein, Hiroshi Ohchi, Maciej Urbaniec, Witold Janowski, David Lance Goines, and others. A fascinating survey of domestic and foreign bicycle poster art and marketing. This is a very nice copy of the scarce hardcover version.~~ Extra shipping charges may be requested for this heavy, oversize book.
