1 Hough, RobertThe Final Confession Of Mabel Stark
New York Atlantic Monthly Press 2003 0871138700 / 9780871138705 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine
Yellow binding with red endpapers. 430 pages. Book is fine in a fine dust jacket, protected in clear arcival cover. ~ A finalist for the 2002 Commonwealth Writer Prize and the 2002 Trillium Award. In the 1910s and 20s, during the golden age of the big top, Mabel Stark was the superstar of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, and one of America's most eccentric celebrities. A tiny, curvaceous Kentucky blonde in a white leather bodysuit, Mabel was brazen, sexually adventurous, and suicidally courageous. This debut novel is the fictional autobiography of this female tiger trainer, in which her life and amazing adventures are narrated with the warmth of her own unique perspective. It is a story of an America before television and movies, when the spectacle of the circus reigned and an unlikely woman captured the public imagination with her singular charm and audacity. Her own real autobiography, "Hold That Tiger," was published in 1938 and is now quite scarce. Though fiction, this is an entertaining glimpse into American circus lore. A fine first edition copy.
