Levine, Hillel; Harmon, Lawrence. The Death of an American Jewish Community: A Tragedy of Good Intentions New York Free Press 1992 0029138655 / 9780029138656 Hard Cover Fine Fine Signed by Author Second Printing. Black binding with metallic orange spine lettering. 370 pages. B&W illustrations; Notes; Index. The authors detail how an initially well-intentioned plan to integrate Boston's urban neighborhoods instead created more racial tension, fueled race riots, and led to the destruction of a rooted Jewish inner-city community. Plans were made to make mortgage loans available to blacks who wanted to buy homes in middle-class neighborhoods, but a private "redlining agreement" limited this practice to Dorchester, an established Jewish community, in the belief that Jews would be more tolerant. Opportunistic and unscrupulous real estate brokers then fueled white flight by intentionally frightening homeowners into selling their homes. This copy is SIGNED on the title page by both authors. Book is in like-new condition save for a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. Dust jacket is fine. Please see bookseller photo. In clear archival cover. Price:
