Sagan, Eli. At the Dawn of Tyranny : The Origins of Individualism, Political Oppression, and the State London Faber and Faber 1986 0571138225 / 9780571138227 First UK Edition Hardcover Very Good Very Good+ First printing. 420 pages. Black-and-white illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. ~~Anthropologist Eli Sagan identifies a stage of civilization which he calls "complex society," which represents a transitional stage between nonliterate primitive societies, which had no concept of an organized "state" and in which kinship and magic were prominent features, and later archaic civilizations, such as those of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, which were literate, sophisticated empires with highly evolved political structures. The ancient society of Buganda, described Speke and Stanley, represents this state of complex society, which is characterized by being nonliterate, yet having a centralized, hierarchical and tyrannical organization. Sagan asserts that this intermediate state from primitive to archaic also pinpoints the origin of the "darker side" of human existence, i.e., class differences, aristocratic tyranny, and political oppression, and that interestingly, human sacrifice was another hallmark of the complex society, but not of primitive or archaic ones. Sagan also rather controversially places a strong emphasis on the evolution of the human psyche in his analysis, though the long-term value of this treatise lies more with his treatment of the evolution of the societal structures themselves. ~~ Book is clean, show little to no wear. Half-title page has a blank bookplate covering previous institutional owner name and address. Also, one of the two blank free endpapers has a previous owner stamp and some writing on it, but this is now mostly hidden because this endpaper has been glued down to the front pastedown.
