First printing. Burnt orange cloth spine and burnt orange boards; gilt spine lettering and authors initials in gilt on front cover. Attractive rough-cut pages. 428 pages. The third of the authors novels set in southern Appalachia. This novel tells the story of three generations of the Clayburn family, farmers turned entrepreneurs in a successful canning company. Told through the perspective of the grandson, this novel dramatizes the ongoing changes in the social and economic fabric of the U.S., the conflicts between traditional values, impersonal progress, and the environment. Book is clean, tight and square; bottom front corner is bumped and top corner and part of top edge is also bumped ans slightly crushed. Very mild wear on heel of spine. Previous owener name and date on free endpaper. Dust jacket has only minor crinkling at head/heel of spine and flap folds; there is a thin, inch-long area along top edge on the back panel where the lamination has separated from the paper cover. Overall, this is a very nice copy, in an archival cover.
