Stapled beige stiff paper wraps. No printing information. 27 pages. Black and white illustrations, maps and a partial reproduction of a soldier's personal correspondence and of an official document. Bibliography. ~~ The first shots of the Civil War, fired at Fort Barrancas in Pensacola, Florida, in January 1861, forced a small group of Union soldiers to man and defend Ft. Pickens. With less than eighty men it was held until it was relieved in April 1861. By May 1862 the Confederate forces in Pensacola were removed, and thanks to the tenacity of these Union soldiers, Pensacola had been saved for the Union. 32-page booklet in stiff paper wraps. 4 black & white illustrations and 2 black & white maps. ~~ Fort Pickens is located on Santa Rosa Island, off the coast of Pensacola, Florida. It was the only one of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay that was never occupied by the Confederates. The author is a volunteer at the Visitors Center at Ft. Pickens, which is now part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. This booklet is a collection of stories relating to ghosts and sightings of historical figures such as Lt. Loomis Langdon, Braxton Bragg, Colonel William Chase, and others, some told to Walby by visitors about their personal experiences, and some that have been historically documented, for which he provides footnotes.
