Illustrations/decoration by Don Perceval. ~~ John Peabody Harrington was an anthropologist noted for his work in the ethnology of the Indians of the North American continent and the study and recording of their languages. Author Laird, also an anthropologist, was married to Peabody for six years, during which time she traveled with him and assisted him in his work on the Indian tribes of the American Southwest. She details this period, and also reveals the man himself, his exhausting work ethic, and the ruthlessness that resulted from his driven nature. Laird eventually became disenchanted with her husband, fell in love with a Chemehuevi informant and divorced. She is best known for her detailed study of the Chemehuevis and published a book about them to critical acclaim. ~~ Book is clean, shows no wear. Dust jacket is very good plus with only very minor crinkling/rubbing to head/heel of spine and edges of flap folds, and has one small darkened spot on front edge of spine. In clear archival cover. Quite a nice copy.
