New York Alfred A. Knopf 1988 Uncorrected Proof Paper Wraps Near Fine
Cream wraps. 599 pages. Nearly fine, clean, no reading crease, with a hint of wrinkling at bottom edge and a small wrinkle at edge of cover. The previous owner seems to have protected this proof with a copy of the first edition book jacket wrapped around the covers, with a clear cover over that. Since the published book is a larger width, the flaps of the jacket were folded to fit. ~~ Brodkey's stories appeared regularly in The New Yorker, Esquire, American Review, and other magazines, and he twice won the O. Henry Award. This collection was published when readers were also anticipating the eventual publication of his novel which didn't come before his death in 1996. From the jacket: "Collected for the first time, the extraordinary stories that are the basis of Harold Brodkey's reputation as a major twentieth-century American writer . . . It is a book that abounds with dazzling literary epiphanies. It is certain to be recognized as one of the most significant works of American fiction to appear in many years."
