Red cloth with black/gold detailing; attractive rough-cut pages. 374 pages. "A" and Scribner's seal on copyright page. Book is clean, tight, with a few spots on top of text block only. Dust jacket has edge wear consisting of some small tears and chips, most notably at head/heel of spine and at flap folds, with a 1" chip on top of back panel and two smaller chips at head of spine. Now protected in clear archival cover. ~~ Kendrick's first work of historical fiction, taking place in Florida during the period 1787 to 1812. Orphan Artillery Ames is raised and rigorously educated and trained by outlaw Dan McKetch before going to live in an Indian village after rescuing the Indian prince Hasse Micco. When McKetch is betrayed to the Spaniards, Artillery lends his alliegance to the U.S. in fighting the Spanish. Two women figure in Ames's life: the wealthy Beth Hulbert, and the slave girl Dauna. "Based on exhaustive research, [this] is an authentic recreation of a little-known chapter of American History. It is made vivid by Mr. Kendrick's knowledge and love of the Florida country. But most important of all, [it] is a wonderful story which sweeps ahead, rich in colorful characters and in the excitement of the time." --dust jacket. This is a very nice copy of a respected work of Florida and U.S. historical fiction.
