Green paperback. 392 pages. Notes & bibliographic references. ~ Book is clean, tight, no edge wear. Approximately 15 pages in one article in the Norwegian literature section, each have corner creases and a few lines of underlining and/or brackets and an occasional note. Remaining text is unmarked. ~~ Because the five Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) have a fine body of literature and literary criticism that is available only in their respective native languages, the editors have compiled of "some of the finest criticism produced in the five countries over the past two decades," translated in to English for this book. There is an introductory article for each country as well as three to six articles of literary criticism. Following are five sample article titles, one for each country. DENMARK: "Karen Blixen's Place in Modern European Literature." FINLAND: "The Roots of the Finnish War Novel." ICELAND: "A Critical Review of Jakobina Sigurdardottir's 'The Living Water'." NORWAY: "The Attack That Changed To a Defense: Femininity, Love and the Nuclear Family in Sigrid Undset's 'Jenny'." SWEDEN: "The Shortcuts of Thought: On Strindberg's Anthropology." This book was produced with grant funds from the Nordic Cultural Foundation.
