1 Rothery, AgnesIceland: New World Outpost
New York Viking Press 1948 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
Green cloth with yellow cover and spine titling, map endpapers. 214 pages + page listing additional titles by author. Includes Chronological Outline of Icelandic History. Bibliography. Index. ~ Book is quite nice, clean, binding tight, interior pages unmarked. The only very minor flaws are a one minor stain on fore edge, and tape that was on the plastic cover protecting the dust jacket (tape was on the plastic cover ONLY) left partial brown outlines on the endpapers. A nice little map of Iceland has been carefully affixed to the dedication page at corners only, thus can be easily removed, and not here considered a flaw. Dust jacket is quite fresh due to having been covered in plastic; however, there is a little bit of rubbing/wear to head/tail of spine and a light triangular damp stain on bottom of each flap fold. Now in a clear archival cover. ~~ Agnes Rothery was an author of novels and plays, but was best known for her many books of travel writing, especially for those on Scandinavia. She was decorated by the King of Denmark in recognition of her writing during the war. This book is the last title in her Scandinavian series. She discusses the beauty of the country's unique natural features--volcanoes, hot springs and geysers, glaciers, etc.--its cultural history, literature and art, the sagas, industry and farming, the political and economic climate at the time, and makes many other observations as well. "It is an accurate and perceptive account by a sympathetic and sensitive author-traveler . . . one of the most rational as well as delightful writers of travel prose . . . of a complex and fascinating country." A nice look at the Iceland of a half-century ago.
