Cincinnati, OH Jennings and Graham 1905 First Edition Hardcover Very Good various Artists
First printing. Green cloth with black, white and gilt lettering and artistic decoration on spine and front cover. Top of text block is gilt. 342 pages. B&W illustrations throughout by various artists, including the author himself, C. S. Parmenter, C.W. Boynton, F. A. Carrier, L. M. Powell, L. L. Dyche, and several others. Book has some wear at head/heel of spine and at corners, minor age soiling to text block, interior hinges just starting but binding intact, interior pages clean and unmarked. There is a silk page marker in the book though it has become detached at the top. ~~ William Quayle was an American Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was a prolific reader and writer, and maintained an impressive collection of early Bibles and related works which he later donated to his alma mater, Baker University. In his writings he blended his reverence of God and the beauty of nature into a poetic tribute to both. This book is a delightful sharing of his musings and observations about the wonder of nature and being. The Contents sections are titled pleasingly, for example: "I Saw a Bluebird"; "When the Frogs Sing"; "The Open Road"; "Tree Pillars"; "A December Spring"; etc. Likewise, the numerous illustrations, which vary from full page views to page insets, contain colorful captions, eg. "Here Autumn Weeps"; "The Bewildered Sea"; "The Road to the Dying Day." Beautifully written, with some poetry also, this book is both an uplifting and reassuring conversational commentary on the gifts of nature and of our maker. A very special work.
