Denim spine with cream boards and gilt spine lettering. 92 pages. B&W caricature drawings by David Levine. This little book is a collection of the best stories of 1993 in Tennis Week magazine, of which Eugene Scott was the founder and publisher. This compilation includes selections of many of the most prominent authors in the sport including Bud Collins, Richard Evans, Gene Scott, Michael Mewshaw, and George Plimpton, who also wrote the Foreward, and who was a tennis player himself. The articles represent the headlining topics of the year: Monica Seles's stabbing, Bjorn Borg's comeback attempt, elite training camps, abuses of players by coaches and parents, etc., with perhaps the highlight piece being the one by the book's editor (Scott) about the tragic passing of Arthur Ashe. Each article is accompanied by a caricature by artist/illustrator David Levine, one of the country's leading caricaturists known for his work in the New York Review of Books. Not only is this book a fine piece of tennis memorabilia, but it also has the distinction of carrying original caricatures by David Levine. A further distinction is that this book bears three signatures: David Levine's signature appears on the free endpaper, accompanied by a drawing of an ink pen; Gene Scott's signature on the title page is accompanied by an illustration of a face with glasses; George Plimpton's is simply a flat signature on the title page. All three of these contributors are now deceased, Levine very recently at the end of December 2009, Scott in 2006, and Plimpton in 2003. A notable piece of sports journalism, illustration, and Americana. ~~ Book is fine in a fine dust jacket, protected in archival cover.
