Illustrator Frederic Dorr Steele, who had already begun to establish himself at Collier's Weekly, created a new standard for Homes illustrations and this established him as the premiere illustrator of Sherlock Holmes. ~~ Book is near fine; light rubbing along spine and little bits of wear at head/heel of spine. Fontispiece portrait of Ihara. Ihara (1641-93), a novelist and haiku poet, was the first writer/spokesman for the Japanese masses.
