         About Grass River Books

           Barbara Beattie, Proprietor.
Grass River Books is an online-only book dealership operating out of Sarasota, on the beautiful west coast of Florida.
Our bookstore name is a tribute to the magnificent Florida Everglades.  A now-classic book by Marjory Stoneman Douglas, published in
1947, was poetically entitled The Everglades: River of Grass.

     Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Douglas was the first to point out the beauty and importance of this unique ecosystem and natural    The Everglades: River of Grass
habitat, and of the need to protect it and save it from destruction. The title of her book is
significant because for the first time the Everglades was recognized as being not just a
stagnant swamp, but actually a river with moving water. Douglas devoted her life to
Everglades preservation and to educating the public about the abundant natural
                  resources and wildlife present there.

We are in process of building a separate page devoted to Marjory Stoneman Douglas's life
and work, and this page will also showcase the beauty of the Everglades and will provide
links for further information.  Please check back soon!

Douglas published many fiction and nonfiction books and has also been biographied.
